About me

My name is Guilherme Bretas Guimarães. I am a psychiatrist and a specialist in bipolar disorder. In this field, I see patients and conduct research at the Bipolar Disorder Research Laboratory at UFRJ (BiPoLaB), where I am beginning my master’s degree under the supervision of the distinguished Professor Elie Cheniaux.

I completed Dr. Renato Silva’s specialization program in mood disorders—he is one of Brazil’s leading experts in the field—as well as Dr. Diego Tavares’s program at the USP Mood Disorders Research Group.

My academic and clinical experience includes three years dedicated to Psychiatry at UFF. In my practice, my goal is not only to care for patients' mental health, but also to offer a comprehensive approach that includes managing compulsive eating and encouraging healthy weight loss. I have a special dedication to conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), insomnia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder. My practice also includes significant experience at UFRJ's Treatment-Resistant Depression Outpatient Clinic, where I focused on researching forms of depression that do not respond to conventional treatments—an area that particularly fascinates me. I also have a strong interest in Neurology and am completing a postgraduate program in the field at IPEMED/RJ. This enriches my practice and deepens my expertise in conditions such as migraine, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain.
